Health and Insurance

Health insurance in Norway, set up correctly

Once you are settled, you join the National Insurance Scheme (folketrygden), administered through NAV and Helfo, and register with a fastlege (regular GP). We help you get your helsekort, your European Health Insurance Card, and the right supplementary cover, all coordinated through your portal.

Public and private healthcare in Norway

Norway runs a strong public system funded through folketrygden, with private cover used to speed up specialist access.

How it works

A few core pieces connect your national ID to public healthcare and any cover you add on top.

National Insurance Scheme

Membership of folketrygden, via NAV and Helfo, is the basis for public healthcare access.

Helsekort

Your health card, linked to your fødselsnummer, confirms your right to subsidised care.

Fastlege (GP)

Register with a regular GP near your address, your entry point to specialists and referrals.

European Health Insurance Card

For members travelling within the EEA, covering necessary care during temporary stays.

Private supplementary

Faster specialist appointments, plus dental, optical and other extras the public system charges for.

Family coverage

Spouse and children registered and added, managed from a single dashboard.

What to expect from Norwegian healthcare

The system is built around your GP as a gatekeeper, with most care heavily subsidised once you are a member.

GP as gatekeeper

Your fastlege handles everyday care and refers you on to specialists and hospitals.

Subsidised care

Members pay modest user fees up to an annual cap, after which a frikort covers further costs.

Hospital treatment

Specialist and hospital care is publicly funded for members on referral from a GP.

Prescriptions

Medicines are partly subsidised, with reduced rates for many on the blue-prescription scheme.

Dental care

Largely private and paid for adults, with public coverage focused on children.

Emergencies

Call the medical emergency number for the legevakt, or the national emergency line for life-threatening cases.
