Skilled Worker Permit

Skilled Worker Permit for Norway

The Skilled Worker permit Norway grants to qualified hires (Faglært arbeidstaker), filed under Utlendingsforskriften §6-1, is the most common residence permit for specialist and senior talent. It is for employees with a concrete Norwegian job offer that matches their qualifications and pays at the level set yearly by UDI or at the relevant collective-agreement rate.

Why most hires use this route

The Skilled Worker permit is the pathway chosen by thousands of professionals each year, especially in ICT, engineering, healthcare and the energy sector. The logic is straightforward. You hold a recognised qualification, a Norwegian employer offers you a role that uses it, and the pay meets Norwegian standards. There is no separate proof that no local worker is available, so a clean file moves directly to UDI for a decision.

What makes a case work

Norwegian job offer: a concrete, signed employment contract
Salary above threshold: annual level set yearly by UDI, or the relevant tariff
Standard Norwegian terms: pay and conditions per Norwegian norms
Employer compliant: registered Norwegian employer in good standing

What is included

Eligibility check and salary review
Document collection in your portal
Application drafting and submission
Biometrics and embassy coordination
Family reunification add-on if needed
Arrival, fødselsnummer or D-nummer and tax setup on landing

The two tests UDI applies

A Skilled Worker case turns on two things: that you are qualified, and that the offer pays at the regulated level. We check both before you file.

Qualification

You meet the skilled-worker bar through one of these.

  • Completed vocational training
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Special qualifications gained through experience

Salary that counts

The offer must reach the regulated level, made up of guaranteed pay.

  • Fixed, guaranteed salary in the contract
  • Tariff or collective-agreement rate where one applies
  • The level set yearly by UDI by qualification

Job match

The role itself must use the qualification you rely on.

  • Duties match your education or trade
  • A full-time position as a rule
  • Authorisation for regulated professions

From job offer to start date

A Skilled Worker case follows a clear path. We run each stage for you and keep documents and status in one portal.

1. Assess and prepare

We confirm your qualification and the offered salary against the current level, then build the document set.

2. File with UDI

We draft and submit the application and arrange the state processing fee.

3. Biometrics

You give fingerprints and a photo at the nearest embassy, VFS centre or the police.

4. Processing

UDI reviews the file. We respond to any follow-up requests on your behalf.

5. Arrive and settle

On approval we handle police registration, the national registry and tax setup so you can start work without delay.

Flexibility once you are approved

You are not locked to a single employer for life. If you move to a new qualifying role, a fresh permit is needed, and continuity matters, so plan the change with us before you start.

Moving employer

  • New qualifying role: the new job must also meet the skilled-worker and salary conditions
  • New application: each change of employer requires a new contract and a new UDI application
  • No employer lock-in: once approved, you can move within the rules
  • Keep continuity: file the new case in good time to protect your status and settlement clock

Common questions

  • The salary level is set yearly by UDI and varies by qualification level.
  • A concrete written job offer is required before filing, not a verbal agreement.
  • Regulated professions, such as healthcare, may need separate authorisation.
  • You can usually apply from your home country or, in some cases, from inside Norway.

Why the Skilled Worker route fits most hires

Strengths of the route

  • Counts toward settlement: time on the permit counts toward permanent residence
  • Family can join: spouse, partner and children may apply for family immigration
  • Renewable while employment and salary conditions continue
  • Combines with Fast Track: certified employers can file the same case under Fast Track for quicker handling

Where it leads

  • Qualifying years build toward permanent residence in Norway.
  • The route can later transition to self-employment or a business permit.
  • Family members may gain the right to live, study and in many cases work.
  • We track renewals so you never fall out of status.
